2024 Initiatives

VOTE NO to Repealing the Capital Gains Tax

This initiative would repeal Washington’s current capital gains ta on stock market profits greater than $250,000 making it a tax break for Washington’s millionaires and billionaires. This capital gains tax is paid by only 0.2% of the wealthiest Washingtonians. In its first year nearly $900 million from capital gains tax funded early learning, childcare, and schools. The capital gains tax is the reason why Washington no longer has the most regressive tax code in the nation.

VOTE NO to Repealing the Climate Commitment Act

The Climate Commitment Act (CCA) was enacted to protect communities from the environmental harm caused by big polluters, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create new jobs.  It would prohibit agencies from imposing any type of carbon tax credit trading and repeal legislation creating a cap and invest program for large polluters.  Without funding raised by the CCA there would be a reduction or elimination of many programs including restoration of estuaries and marine shoreline habitats, reduction of flood risk and restoration of natural floodplains, improvements to forest health, preservation of natural lands, increasing the sustainable supply of water, and the Working Families Tax Credit.  The revenue generated by the CCA creates good paying jobs in the field of building energy-efficient homes, installing heat pumps and solar panels. If I-2117 is passed it will eliminate jobs and prevent the creation of new jobs.

VOTE NO to Opting Out of Long-Term Care Insurance

Like a Medicare and Social Security type plan, WA Care Fund will provide access to an affordable guaranteed plan to provide money for home care and other long-term care needs.  Making it optional to pay into the program will cause the WA Care Fund to collapse. Without WA Care Fund, workers will only have the option to purchase long-term care insurance through private companies only affordable by the wealthy thereby impacting millions who would go without homecare essentials like family caregiving and home modifications.

Endorsement Qualifications:

To qualify for endorsement, a candidate must be running as a Democrat or Non-Partisan (or if running for a nonpartisan position be aligned with the values of State, County, and Legislative District Democratic parties) for an office which has jurisdiction, in whole or part, within Washington's 28th legislative District. It is not permissible to endorse any candidate who is a known member of any other political party. This includes members of the Republican, Libertarian, Reform, American Taxpayer, Independent, or any other party recognized with party status by the Washington State Secretary of State.

Procedures:

The Organization (LD28) shall consider endorsing candidates for partisan and non-partisan political office.

The Candidate is to request an endorsement in writing to the Chair. In the case of state-wide or national races in which the candidate is unlikely to request The Organization's endorsement, five (5) members may send a request for endorsement to the Chair.  (SEND ENDORSEMENT REQUEST TO Ashley Fedan Afedan@mac.com ) The Chair will forward the request to the Endorsement Committee.

A minimum of four (4) members of the Endorsement Committee must review and accept the request. It will be up to the Endorsement Committee to determine if a candidate interview will be held.  The Endorsement Committee will give its recommendation to the Chair for general membership review.

The Chair shall place the Endorsement Committee recommendations on the next general membership meeting agenda.  Notice shall be given seven (7) days prior to the meeting at which the endorsement vote shall take place.

At the general membership meeting a two-thirds majority of the members casting votes must vote “Yes” to approve the endorsement.  Candidates for the office under discussion, their staffs, or representatives who are not members of the 28th Legislative District are not to be present at the time of the general membership debate and vote.

The result of the votes shall be written and sent to the requesting person within five (5) days of the vote.  The Organization may provide single endorsements or multiple endorsements for a single position as voted by its members and reserves the right to review and modify endorsements after passing.  Any endorsement can be revoked by a two-thirds vote at a general membership meeting. Any revocation must include notice to involved parties and is subject to all terms for endorsement.  The Organization will not make an endorsement sooner than the filing date deadline. The Organization may make endorsements on initiatives or other special issues without such restriction.
